Choosing the right chain length can be the difference between a piece that defines your style and one that goes unnoticed. This guide explains everything you need to know – from how to measure to which length works best for your build and how you plan to wear it.
How to measure chain length
Chain length is measured from end to end, including the clasp. It is expressed in centimeters (in Latin America and Europe) or inches (in Anglo-Saxon markets).
To measure your neck:
- Use a flexible tape measure
- Wrap it around your neck at the level where you want the chain to fall
- Add 5 to 10 cm for a comfortable, non-tight fit
Standard lengths and where they fall on the body
| Length | Position on the body | Recommended style |
|---|---|---|
| 40–45 cm | Base of the neck, very snug | Choker, not recommended for men |
| 50 cm | Above the collarbone | Thin chain, casual |
| 55 cm | On the chest, visible with open collar | Most versatile for men |
| 60 cm | Center of the chest | Medium chains, with pendant |
| 65–70 cm | Below the chest | Thick chains for a statement look |
| 75–90 cm | Over the abdomen | Long chains, statement style |
How to choose based on your build?
Slim neck or light build: 50–55 cm lengths work best. A chain that is too long can look disproportionate.
Wide neck or athletic build: You can wear any length, but 55–65 cm are usually the most flattering. The thickness of the chain also matters — a wide neck can easily wear gauges of 8mm or more.
Sturdy or large build: 60–70 cm lengths balance proportions better. Avoid very short chains that might look tight.
With or without a pendant?
If you are going to wear the chain with a pendant, consider a length of 60 cm or more so that the pendant falls in the center of the chest and is visible. Our silver pendants are designed to be combined with chains from 55 to 70 cm.
If the chain is worn alone, 55 cm is the ideal starting point – it rests on the chest with any type of clothing.
How many chains can be worn together?
Wearing several chains at the same time – "layering" – is one of the strongest styles in men's jewelry. The basic rule:
- 2 chains: at least 5–8 cm difference between each
- 3 chains: 5 cm difference between each, also varying the thickness
- Combine a thin chain (2–4mm) with a thick one (8–12mm) for contrast
You can see combinations of our 950 silver chains and our 999 Cuban chains to build your own stack.
Recommendations by occasion
- Daily wear / work: 50–55 cm, fine to medium thickness (3–6mm)
- Night out / event: 55–65 cm, medium to thick (6–12mm)
- Statement / maximum presence: 65–75 cm, thick Cuban chain (10–20mm)
In summary: 55 cm length is the starting point
If you don't know where to start, the 55 cm length is the most versatile for men. It looks good with an open collar, under a shirt, or with any build. From there you can adjust according to your style.
